It's not the dark we're afraid of, it's what we think
might be lurking in it that frightens us.

Welcome to Holiday Hollow!

Holiday Hollow is my celebration of Autumn and Winter. Especially the holidays of Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas. There's a few family birthdays in there too.

It doesn't have to be Autumn, or Fall as its more popularly known in North America, to find ideas and inspiration for the Holiday season. I love this time of year more than any other. In preparing for her period of rest, Nature gives us her most spectacular display. Red, gold, plum, blue, brown and orange delight the eye. The air is crisper and redolent with the scent of wood smoke and damp earth.

September heralds apple harvesting for baking and cooking. Remember Boy Scout Apple Day? Children return to school with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Mums (and Dads) give a sigh of relief. There's a family birthday this month. The Autumnal equinox arrives now too.

October brings frost on the pumpkin, turning the green gourds the familiar cheery orange hue, and signals the time to harvest them. If you are Canadian, you'll celebrate Thanksgiving this month. The house will be filled with the delicious aromas of turkey and stuffing, pies, muffins and breads. A time for family and friends. Halloween or Samhain; a night of trick or treating, costumes, jack o lanterns, games and high spirits. Two more family birthdays this month!

November marks the solemn occasion of Remembrance Day. Poppies, the symbol of that remembrance, are everywhere. The later harvest in the U.S. means Thanksgiving in that country this month. The oddly named "Black Friday", the Friday after Thanksgiving, that traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping period.

December; Advent, the period of waiting and preparation for the birth of the Christ Child. Decorations are retrieved from storage, lists, lists and more lists! For food shopping, gifts, decorating, travel plans. The Winter Solstice begins just a few days before Christmas Day. Days shorten rapidly and homes light up the longer evenings with colourful displays. Christmas Eve; it still makes me giddy. I suppose in some things you never entirely lose your inner child. And two more birthdays this month! Honestly, like gift giving can't be difficult enough, there's people with the nerve to have been born in December! Just kidding.....

Christmas Day and Boxing Day with family and friends. The days seem to fly by, heading towards the New Year....

Welcome to Holiday Hollow!
